#onthisday, 1967, the Arab League convened in Khartoum, Sudan to state their infamous 3 No's: No Peace with Israel, No Recognition of Israel, No Negotiations with Israel.

.

In 2020, we see the long-term effects of this resolution beginning to crack: Egypt, Jordan, and the UAE have signed bilateral agreements of peace and diplomacy with Israel. Also, a bevy of other Arab countries are allegedly on the way to doing the same - ironically Sudan being one of them.

.

After Israel won the Six Day war in 1967 they were expecting a call from the Arab world to negotiate peace. Israel thought that after yet another resounding victory, it would prove that they were here to stay and could reach a peace agreement in the region.

.

Israel was open to almost all negotiations, except a complete return to the ‘48 armistice lines and would not re-divide Jerusalem.

.

Shortly after the end of the war, Israel realized that they were wrong when Egypt and Syria began to resupply their militaries.

.

This was followed by Egyptain President Nasser stating “We shall never surrender and shall not accept any peace - that means surrender."

.

Nasser wanted Israel to pull back to the 1947 UN partition plan, which was never even accepted in the first place.

.

The leaders of 13 Arab countries met in Khartoum, Sudan at the 1967 Arab League Summit from August 29 until September 1.

.

#onthisday they issued the Khartoum Resolution which stated “no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with it.”

.

The 3 no’s were followed for over a decade until Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. That led to Egypt being expelled by the Arab League until 1989 when it was readmitted.
