#onthisday, 1685, Jews of Suriname (mostly comprised of Portuguese and Spanish Jews fleeing the Inquisition) establish the Bracha V'Shalom Synagogue in Jodensavanne near Paramaribo. It is considered one of the oldest Jewish sites in the Americas.

Nowadays, where the synagogue once stood is a preserved site in the jungles of Suriname.
