On this day, Mordecai Manuel Noah died in New York. The Jewish Encyclopedia dates his birth to 19 July 1785 in Philadelphia and his death to 22 March 1851. He was a journalist, playwright, and diplomat.

He served as United States consul at Tunis and later returned to New York. In 1825 he proposed a Jewish colony, Ararat, on Grand Island in the Niagara River, as a temporary refuge. The dedication was held in Buffalo that September. The colony was never built. Noah kept arguing for a Jewish return to the Land of Israel.
