On this day, German forces seized the Jewish Combat Organization headquarters at 18 Miła Street in the Warsaw ghetto. Mordechai Anielewicz, who had commanded ŻOB since November 1942, died in the bunker with many of his staff. USHMM records that they are thought to have committed suicide to avoid capture.

The uprising had opened on 19 April, the first night of Passover. SS and Police Leader Jürgen Stroop reported the ghetto destroyed on 16 May.
