In 1878, Naphtali Herz Imber wrote the poem that became Hatikvah. The Jewish Virtual Library says he probably wrote it in Iași that year, under the title Tikvatenu, Our Hope. It was published in his book Barkai in 1886.

In 1882 he read it to farmers at Rishon LeZion, and Samuel Cohen set it to a Moldavian folk melody.
