Nathan Birnbaum was born in Vienna in 1864. The Jewish Virtual Library records that he lived there until 1908, founded the Jewish nationalist student group Kadimah in 1882, and published the periodical Selbst-Emancipation.

He later rejected Zionism for religious Judaism. He died in Scheveningen, in the Netherlands, in 1937.
