On this day, Oskar Schindler died in Hildesheim, West Germany, at the age of 66. Yad Vashem records that survivors brought his body to Jerusalem and buried him in the Catholic cemetery on Mount Zion.

In Kraków he had employed Jewish forced laborers in an enamelware factory, and in 1944 he moved workers to a factory at Brünnlitz, in the Sudetenland. USHMM records that he helped more than 1,000 Jews survive. On 8 May 1962 Yad Vashem invited him to plant a tree on the Avenue of the Righteous. The formal title Righteous Among the Nations was given to Oskar and Emilie Schindler on 24 June 1993.
