On this day, Israeli forces began the forced evacuation of Yamit, the largest Israeli town in Sinai. The Jewish Virtual Library records that most of the original settlers had already left. Followers of Meir Kahane, who had come to resist the withdrawal, threatened to blow themselves up if soldiers entered their bunkers.

Soldiers used foam, water hoses, and cages lowered onto roofs. The same account says there were no casualties. The evacuation was required by the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, which returned the Sinai.
