On this day, the German government issued the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service. It authorized the dismissal of civil servants who were not of “Aryan” descent, including judges, teachers, and other state employees. A companion measure moved to exclude Jews from the legal profession.

Limited exemptions applied at first to some World War I veterans and to people appointed before August 1914. Those exceptions were later stripped away. The law was among the first nationwide measures removing Jews from German public life after Hitler became chancellor.
