On this day, the troops of Ibrahim Pasha took Hebron while crushing the peasants’ revolt against Egyptian rule. The Jews of the city had not joined the revolt. Rabbi Joseph Schwarz, writing in 1850, recorded that the town was stormed on 28 Tamuz, that Ibrahim had promised to protect the Jews, and that five Jews were killed anyway. Property that had not been buried was stolen, and the community was left poor.

Later historians count twelve Jewish dead, seven men and five girls. The figure of 500 belongs to accounts of the wider killing in the city, not to a count of Jewish dead.
