On this day, Elie Wiesel died at his home in New York at the age of 87. Born in Sighet and deported as a teenager to Auschwitz and later Buchenwald, he made Night the central public testimony of his survival. The French text of Night appeared in 1958.

He wrote many books and taught. The Jews of Silence (1966) described the constraints on Jewish life in the Soviet Union. Souls on Fire (1972) retold Hasidic portraits while arguing with faith after the Holocaust. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his work as a witness and as an advocate against indifference.
