On this day, the council of the enlarged Jewish Agency opened in Zurich. The World Zionist Organization records that the announcement came at the close of the Sixteenth Zionist Congress and that Chaim Weizmann was president. Until then the Zionist Organization itself had been the body recognized under the Mandate as the Jewish Agency.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported that the council would have 220 members, half Zionists and half non-Zionists. The constitution of the enlarged Agency was signed in Zurich on August 14.
