On this day, Israel finished evacuating residents from the settlements in the Gaza Strip. A Congressional Research Service account of the disengagement records that police and soldiers began removing people who had not left on their own on 17 August 2005, that the Gaza evacuation was completed on 22 August, and that four settlements in the northern West Bank were cleared on 23 August.

The same withdrawal covered 21 Gaza settlements and those four West Bank settlements, about 8,500 people. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had announced it as a unilateral step. Israeli forces remained in the Strip until 12 September, when the army finished leaving its bases there.
