On this day, militants tunneled into Israel near the Kerem Shalom crossing and attacked a tank on a surveillance mission by the Gaza fence. The Israel Defense Forces record that Lieutenant Hanan Barak and Staff Sergeant Pavel Slutsker were killed, another soldier was wounded, and Gilad Shalit was taken into the Gaza Strip.
Shalit was returned on October 18, 2011. The Israel Defense Forces record that Israel released 1,027 prisoners in the exchange. He was handed to Egyptian mediators at Rafah and then brought back through Kerem Shalom.
