On this day, the Golani Brigade was formed. The Israel Defense Forces date the founding to February 22, 1948, during the war that led to Israel’s independence. The Jewish Virtual Library records that it was created when the Levanoni Brigade, then on the Lebanese border, was divided, and that Golani was stationed in the Lower Galilee.

Its first soldiers were Haganah members, residents of the settlements in its sector, and recruits from elsewhere in the country. Before independence they fought around Tiberias, Safed, and the Galilee valleys.
