On this day, Isaac Rülf was born in Rauischholzhausen, a village near Marburg in Hesse. The German National Library authority file gives February 10, 1831. He was not born in Memel.
He became rabbi of Memel in 1865 and stayed until 1898. From that border town he organized relief for Jews across the Russian frontier and traveled into Russian Lithuania. Encyclopedia.com records that the people he helped called him Doktor Hülf, “Doctor Help.” He argued for a Jewish return to the Land of Israel and died in Bonn in 1902.
