On the night of 31 May–1 June 1962, Adolf Eichmann was hanged at Ramla Prison. President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi had refused clemency. Eichmann was told of the refusal on the evening of 31 May. The hanging was scheduled for midnight and was carried out a few minutes into 1 June after a brief delay.

He had been convicted in Jerusalem in 1961 of crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. His body was cremated. The ashes were scattered in the Mediterranean beyond Israel’s territorial waters.
