On this day, several hundred people gathered in Jerusalem for the first public demonstration of the Israeli Black Panthers. The young Mizrahi organizers, including Saadia Marciano, had announced themselves in January. A demonstration permit was denied. Several organizers were detained beforehand. The rally went ahead.
The group demanded better housing, pay, and schooling for Mizrahi Israelis. Later, larger protests, including the May 1971 “Night of the Panthers,” are separate stories.
