On this day, German authorities sealed the Łódź ghetto. Jews had been ordered into the Bałuty and Old Town district from early February, beginning with an order of 8 February. About 160,000 Łódź Jews were inside when the fence and guards closed the quarter.

Later arrivals from the Warthegau and from central Europe increased the confined population. Deportations to Chełmno began in January 1942, and the ghetto was liquidated in 1944.
