On this day, Max Nordau was born in Pest. The Jewish Virtual Library records the name Simon Maximilian Südfeld, the date 29 July 1849, and his father Gabriel Südfeld, an Orthodox rabbi. Nordau later practiced medicine in Paris and became a principal figure beside Theodor Herzl in the Zionist Congress.
He died on 23 January 1923.
