On this day, Menachem Begin died at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, of a heart ailment. He was born in Brest-Litovsk in 1913, reached Mandatory Palestine in 1942, and later commanded the Irgun. He became prime minister in 1977. In 1978 he and Anwar Sadat signed the Camp David Accords; the Egypt–Israel peace treaty followed on 26 March 1979.

He resigned in 1983, after the Lebanon war. He asked for a simple Jewish funeral and was buried the same day on the Mount of Olives beside Aliza Begin, not on Mount Herzl. The 1979 peace-treaty signing is a separate story.
