Philip II Authorizes the Inquisition in the Indies

On 25 January 1569, at El Pardo, Philip II issued the royal cédula authorizing Holy Office tribunals in the Indies. Spain still used the Julian calendar. The Lima tribunal was received in 1570.

On this day, Philip II issued a royal cédula at El Pardo authorizing the Holy Office of the Inquisition in the Indies, including the viceroyalty of Peru. The document date is 25 January 1569. Spain had not yet adopted the Gregorian calendar.
The Lima tribunal was formally received on 29 January 1570.
