On this day, during the Warsaw ghetto uprising, Rabbi Menachem Ziemba was shot as he fled a burning building. He had been a Warsaw rabbinic authority, had stayed in the ghetto, and had come to support armed resistance after the 1942 deportations to Treblinka.

His family was later deported to Treblinka. In 1958 his remains were taken from a temporary ghetto burial and reburied in Jerusalem. This article dates the 24 April 1943 killing, five days after the uprising began.
