In 1923, Salamo Arouch was born in Thessaloniki. Surviving accounts give the year only; an exact birth day is not established.

Before the German occupation he boxed as an amateur in Greece. He was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 and was forced to box for SS entertainment. A 1989 New York Times interview records his account of arrival and of being called out as a boxer.
