On this day, Shlomo Hillel was born in Baghdad. The Knesset records that he immigrated in 1934 and died on February 8, 2021. As an emissary of Mossad LeAliyah Bet, he arranged immigration from Iraq and from other Middle Eastern countries.
He served in the Knesset for Mapai and later for Labor, was minister of police and minister of the interior, and was speaker of the Eleventh Knesset from 1984 to 1988. The airlift of Iraqi Jews with which he is identified is known as Operation Ezra and Nehemiah.
