On this day, Theodor Herzl died at Edlach, in Lower Austria. Britannica records that he was 44. The Austrian foreign ministry’s account says he died of heart failure and was buried in Vienna on July 7.

He had founded the political Zionist movement, published Der Judenstaat in 1896, and presided over the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897. In 1949 his remains were brought from Vienna to Jerusalem.
