On this day, eleven Jews met at the Havana home of Manuel Hadida, at Pasaje Arcado No. 9, to found a congregation and buy land for a cemetery. Jay Levinson’s account of the minute book says they were providing for more than one hundred Jewish settlers on the island.

Louis Jurick was elected chairman, and Hadida became secretary. On August 19 the group took the name United Hebrew Congregation of Cuba. Most of the eleven spoke English. Several had come to Cuba for business after the Spanish-American War.
