Yisrael Galili died at his home in February 1986. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s February 10 bulletin said he had died the day before and that his funeral was held that day. Other reference works date the death February 8. He had been ill for two years.

He was born in Brailov, Ukraine, and was brought to Palestine at the age of four. In 1930 he was one of the founders of Kibbutz Na’an. Before the state he headed the Haganah national command. After 1967 he was a close adviser to Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir. His Galili plan was the Labor Party’s platform on the territories taken in 1967: it rejected a Palestinian state and a return to the pre-1967 lines, and it favored territorial compromise only for full peace.
